School Program

NEW SCHOOL PROGRAM FORMAT FOR 2012

The DI is very pleased to facilitate school groups and we are always striving to ensure that the students’ visit to our facility is enjoyable, rewarding and educational.

Our new format welcomes school groups on TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS from 9:00am to 12:00pm.
(Please note – all references to students or group, include teachers and chaperones)

THE DAY’S ACTIVITIES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

SERVE SNACK, SERVICE PROJECTS, TOUR & LUNCH

9:00am – 10:00am – SERVE SNACK:
- Students arrive shortly after 9:00am.
- Students will be directed up to the 6^th floor Multi-Purpose Room where they can leave jackets, bags and any belongings
- Students will be escorted onto the floor to SERVE SNACK to our clients.
- This generally lasts approx. ½ hour.

10:00am – 11:00am - SERVICE PROJECT 1 – CLOTHING SORT:
- HALF OF THE GROUP (max. 15 volunteers) Students will be escorted to the CLOTHING ROOM:

Clothing Sort – duties include: open donated bags of items; sort into piles by clothing type; sort into the clothing store; fold and pack items for distribution; re-bag items with labels of what is in the bags. The Clothing Room Supervisor will provide guidance throughout the activity.

10:00am – 11:00am — SERVICE PROJECT 2 – KITCHEN PREP:
- HALF OF THE GROUP (max 15 volunteers) Students will be escorted to the KITCHEN:

Kitchen Meal Prep – duties include: food preparation and misc. kitchen duties. The Chef supervises and provides guidance throughout the activity.
Close Toed Shoes are required for the kitchen.

11:00am-11:45am – STUDENT TOUR:
- Students will go on a tour of the DI — all at the same time!
- This generally lasts approx. 45min.

11:45am – 12:30pm — EAT LUNCH IN THE MP ROOM:
- Students will bring their lunch and have a quick break. This will wrap up by 12:30pm, in time for the students to return to school for their afternoon classes.

** TOTAL GROUP SIZE (INCLUDING STUDENTS, TEACHERS & CHAPERONES) CANNOT EXCEED 30 VOLUNTEERS.**

THE FOLLOWING WILL BE HELPFUL FOR YOU ON YOUR DI VOLUNTEERING DAY(S):

If you are driving separately, please park on the South side of the building (right in front) where it is marked ‘Reserved Parking’… this is for our Groups and Volunteers!

**Buses are welcome to drop students off at the end of our driveway, as it may be too cumbersome to maneuver in our parking lot.

UPON YOUR ARRIVAL:

Please go to Security and they will arrange for a staff member to lead you to either the volunteering office or upstairs to the Multi Purpose Room, where you may securely leave your coat and any valuables.
You will be met by one of our Volunteer Services staff members who will guide you through your day.
