The Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre is planning on cooking up a storm to feed the homeless as they unveiled two new Rational convection ovens during a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday evening.

Clients, volunteers and donors were treated to a supper of shepherd’s pie with gravy from the new ovens, with more than 1,300 meals being served for the inaugural supper.

The range of ranges was purchased with $100,000 donated by various Calgary organizations and businesses including the Lions Club of Calgary Mountain View, First Energy Capital, and Devon Canada Corporation.

Drop-In executive director Debbie Newman said the ovens will help play a major part in making sure Calgary’s homeless don’t go hungry this winter.

“Obviously food is a staple and we all need to eat,” Newman said. “As the largest shelter in Canada, we see over 3,000 people come to us for each meal. With the ovens we’re able to produce nutritious meals quicker and get food as quickly out to people who are in need.”

The centre serves roughly 1 million meals every year.
