“I’m sorry I couldn’t do better”, Toni wrote in an email message, last year, before dropping off 236 hand knitted toques, filled with toothbrushes, combs, lip balms, razors, candy and gloves. “I had hoped to put a pair of socks in each package, but I just couldn’t afford it.”
“In the coming year, I’ll try to put more complete packages together based on what you need… the cancer I have has taken a turn for the worse, so I may not be able to do as much in the coming year, as I’ll be starting Chemotherapy in January. I’ll do the best I can, though.”
This year, Toni is fighting cancer but that hasn’t stopped her from helping homeless Calgarians. This year, Toni and her new fiancé Brian dropped off a truck load full of hygiene products, new underwear and warm socks for less fortunate people.
Before leaving the DI Toni said, “Doctors only expect me to live another two years. Before the two years are up, I want to give as much as I can.”
Through her hard work and generosity, Toni makes the DI a magical place, a place filled with hope. You can too. We all have the capacity to give. This year, give your time, talents, or treasures to the DI, help homeless Calgarians, and, just like Toni, give people a reason to smile.
