SAIT EMT Students take the pressure

We are excited to have the SAIT EMT students in the building for a 6 week period. They are volunteering their services in several different areas throughout the building. This past Tuesday, a Blood Pressure (BP) Clinic was setup in our Seniors Centre from 10:00am – 12:00pm. Clients were able to have their BP’s taken and received Health Teaching as well. This was very well organized and well received by our clients.

The screening clinic is overseen by Nurse Christy Blanchard, RN, BScN a Chronic Disease Management Nurse from Alberta Health Services. She provided follow-up where needed and supervises the BP clinic. As well she works from our site Monday-Thursday, providing follow-up to many clients who are living with chronic diseases.

During my visit this past Tuesday to the Seniors Centre I saw how engaged and caring the EMT students were while interacting with the clients. The students gained valuable experience and empathy in working in our setting. The clients stated that they were very pleased to have the opportunity to network with the students. Thestudents were very professional and proficient with the clients who were appreciative of their time and talents. A caring and positive relationship quickly developed during the 2 hour period for everyone involved.

We look forward to continuing to network and build strong relationships with the EMT students which in the future, following their graduation, will be a valuable resource and an important part of our service delivery model.
