Province to cut nearly $600,000 from Drop-In Centre budget

Province to cut nearly $600,000 from Drop-In Centre budget

About 200 people who rely on the Calgary Drop-In Centre may be out of luck come April 1st if the province carries out a plan to slash $575,000 from the shelter’s budget.

Last year, the provincial Tories cut the shelter’s funding by $250,000.

The Drop-In Centre’s Executive Director Debbie Newman tells 660News, the impact of having to cut back services will extend to the community because they won’t have the same capacity.

“My conversations with the police were, ‘I hope you’re providing me with an officer 24-hours-a-day because I’m going to need somebody,’” said Newman. “We won’t be able to allow people into the building.”

Newman says she will meet with the province’s Ministry of Human Services next week.
