Over the last 14 years the DI has become, next to our family and next to our Church involvement, the most pivotal focal point in the lives of my wife, Anita, and I.
When the Savior gave the Sermon on the Mount, as it is written in the New Testament , under Matthew 25:40, “… therefore, in as much as ye have done it unto one of the least of these, my Brethren, ye have done it unto me”, He surely must have hoped and must be very pleased with what is done at the Calgary Drop In and Rehab Centre. When I think of the accolades which Dermot received at his recent farewell party, it truly was the closest that I have ever heard of someone personifying the attributes preached in the Beatitudes. I trust that he will receive the blessings therein promised.
To me, the DI means that I can be a part of something great. It means that I can see, in real time, wonderful people working in a difficult environment, serving, caring and loving, without ever judging; forgiving without hesitation and putting others ahead of themselves. The DI has made me want to be a better person and has motivated me to be actively engaged in raising funds and making difficult calls and overlooking rejections because of the examples of patience and perseverance demonstrated at the DI.
I have great faith that the example set by Dermot Baldwin will be perpetuated under the leadership of Debbie Newman.
