Housing at The Quality Inn

On June 13, 2012 the Calgary Drop In & Rehab Centre (The DI) purchased the Quality Inn building located at 4804 Edmonton Trail N.E. The DI owns and operates eight other buildings in Calgary. We have a proud history of establishing and maintaining respected community relationships in Bridgeland, Inglewood, West Hillhurst, Manchester, McCall, and downtown.

For 50 years we have stabilized, supported, and re-integrated thousands of people into the community. Our services and specialized programs are built on respect, compassion, and individual dignity. Our aim is to give low-income Calgarians a home where they can establish roots, build new relationships, and restore hope for the future.

Some truths about people living in poverty:

  • Income does not determine the moral quality of a person.
  • Every person matters.

All people want to be part of something good, experience joy and stability.

Centre 4800 is a place where community starts. Residents will be responsible to pay rent and help each other. Together they will grow a small community which will branch out and contribute to the vitality, safety, and economy of Greenview.

We appreciate your support.

FAQ’s

1. How was the property purchased? We purchased the property in receivership. To bid on the property, the DI agreed to a confidentiality agreement, as part of the process. We won the bidding process, and received the keys on June 13, 2012.
2. Who will stay at Centre 4800? Low income earners (men and women) include working Calgarians and people on pensions can apply to stay at the hotel. Initially, 20 people will inhabit the hotel. Each month, we will welcome an additional 20 people, until the hotel reaches capacity at 117.
3. What is the process to accept residents? Low-income Calgarians, with the ability to pay, can apply to stay at the hotel. Residents must also follow the guidelines of the hotel, be willing to engage in planned community-building events, and undergo a criminal background check. We require a security deposit. Residents must pay for the room and board in advance.
4. Are people with active addictions welcome to stay at Centre 4800? No. Residents must be able to function at a high level of independence. Illegal activities on this property will not be tolerated and will be met with immediate eviction.
5. What services are offered to residents? Room & Board includes breakfast (cereal, toast, muffins, coffee, tea), grocery items to make your own meals(such as sandwiches), and a hot dinner. Breakfast and dinner will be at set times of the day. There are no kitchens in the rooms, but there is a large common dining room and community kitchen on the main floor.
6. What is a SRO? SRO stands for single room occupancy. Each room has its own private bathroom, a bed, TV, small fridge, couch, desk, bureau, desk, chair, and internet access. Land line telephones will be available and the responsibility of the resident.
7. Why are there no kitchens in the suites? Centre 4800 was built and operated as a hotel for many years without kitchen suites. The cost to re-develop the building to add kitchens and additional plumbing to each suite is cost prohibitive. The community kitchen will be available for residents’ use at all times.
8. How will The DI maintain the community’s security? Centre 4800 is a secure facility. Security staff receive all residents who check-in through a biometrics system. There is only one entrance, and except in the case of fire, only one exit. Video cameras will be active inside and outside the building. Cameras will record any incidents that may occur.
9. Will the DI agree to a Good Neighbour Agreement? We look forward to developing a Good Neighbor Agreement with the Greenview community. Through it we intend to mutually acknowledge the need to build a responsive and respectful relationship.
10. Will the building be used as an emergency shelter? Centre 4800 will not operate as emergency shelter.

  1. I am a resident of the Thorncliffe/Greenview community and will not be able to attend the Centre 4800 open house on March 17th. Surely there must be another way I can learn about the details of your plans for the facility, the details of what will be included in your development application to the city, etc? How can I submit feedback to you regarding the development?

  2. Is there a waiting list of Centre 4800? How much is it a month? Does the rooms includes utilities?

    • Hi Amy,

There is not a waiting list for Centre 4800. The details are still being finalized with the community. If you’re interested in applying to reside at the Centre when it opens, please apply.

      - Jordan.
