Monetary Donations

Every dollar we raise ensures those who have lost their families, jobs and homes will never lose hope. Together, we can give them the community, skills and support they need to move beyond homelessness.

Ways to Give

Did you know that there are many ways to give to your favourite charity other than by credit card or by cheque?

Here are some ways you might consider:

A bequest in your will – the ultimate legacy gift

Would you consider making a bequest in your will to the DI? It could be a fixed amount or contingent amount i.e. depending on the distribution of your estate.

We truly value and appreciate all legacy gifts received and we will work with you to make this as easy possible.

Thank you in advance for considering this option! It is truly special.

A gift of stock – and pay no capital gains tax

You may own shares in a company (it may be your employer) and are thinking of cashing them in now that they have gone up in value. But you are wondering how you can avoid paying all that capital gains tax. Simple! All appreciated securities when transferred and then donated to a registered charity avoid capital gains tax assessment. Or in other words, instead of cashing them in and paying capital gains tax you can donate your shares that have gone up in value tax free – and get a tax receipt!

A gift of life insurance – create a charitable legacy in your name for pennies on the dollar

Options:

  • Make the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre the designated beneficiary of a new or existing policy.
  • Transfer ownership of an existing policy to the DI, continue to pay the premiums and receive a tax receipt for the dollar value of each premium paid as well as any accumulated cash value. Or let the DI pay the premiums and the tax receipt will be for the accumulated cash value only. Upon the death of the insured, the DI receives the death benefit.
  • Buy a new policy naming the DI as owner, pay the premiums and receive a tax receipt for each premium payment. Upon the death of the insured the DI receives the death benefit.

Flow-Through Shares

In Alberta, a donation to your favourite charity using a flow-through share arrangement can be made for only 61 cents on the dollar. Or in other words you can make a donation of $10,000 and it will only cost you $6,100 after tax. Contact us for details.

Gifts of property, Charitable Remainder Trusts, Charitable Gift Annuities

These are a few of the less common ways to make a donation involving property and annuity arrangements. If you are interested in exploring these options we can help you with it!

The Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre Endowment Fund

This fund administered by The Calgary Foundation is a key element is ensuring the financial continuity of operations at the DI. Please consider making a donation to our endowment fund.

Note: Currently we do not have an automated monthly donation program in place except by credit card. If you are interested in making a monthly donation by pre-authorized debit system with your bank please contact Mark Powers at 403-699-8269.

Questions? We will work with you to make sure your donation works for you!
