DI Christmas WishList

For the third year in a row, the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre (DI) is offering the DI Christmas WishList program. The DI Christmas WishList is an online sponsorship site that allows generous Calgarians to make Christmas a little brighter for low income and homeless people.

Calgarians are invited to visit the website at http://wishlist.thedi.ca, read each of the DI client stories, and fulfill an individual’s Christmas wish which is posted at the end of each story.

Julia Tsang, one of The DI’s hard working volunteers, shared the following message about her experience with The DI Christmas WishList.

“This year, I volunteered at the Drop In Center as an interviewer for their Christmas Wishlist program. While it is not my first time volunteering at the DI (or the last!), this experience was incredibly eye opening and humbling.

When we look at our cities homeless, we often forget that they are human like every one of us. Because we have a roof over our heads or friends/family to help, we forget that like the homeless, we all make misguided decisions or suffer misfortunes.  When I spoke to the clients of the Drop In Center, it humbled me to see that although they had less than me, they were asking for even less and expecting nothing more. All they wished for were simple necessities like a pair of work boots, a bus pass to see their families and in many instances a gift not for themselves, but something they could pass on to a loved one.

While we spend this year in the warmth of our homes, enjoying the frenzied, but happy time of family and holidays, we have to remember that helping those in need is also very important. To us, a bus pass or a pair of work boots may not seem like much, but to a person who cannot afford these necessities it could be the biggest difference in their struggle to get off the streets. Let’s spread the warmth this year beyond our homes and help grant a wish to someone who needs it desperately during this time of love and giving.”
